Welcome to In Light of Scripture. I’m Mike McGregor (MDiv, RTS). I am a husband to Kelly, father of four, assistant pastor and director of college ministry at First Baptist in Durham, and the author of this blog.
We all have questions. Questions about theology, questions about relationships, questions about morality, questions about business, questions about culture, questions about parenting. Questions, questions, questions. What is rarer are wise and thoughtful answers.
That is where the Bible comes in. The Creator of the universe, the King of glory, and the God of all wisdom has given us his thoughts in a book and unsurprisingly it is the bestseller every year and has been for centuries.
Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” Proverbs 29:13 says, “Where there is no prophetic vision, the people cast off restrain, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” We learn from these two verses that God has revealed wisdom for us to live by, but if we cast off his wisdom, we will perish rather than be blessed. My goal, then, is to shed the light of God’s Word on our questions so that we might be blessed in keeping his law.
This doesn’t mean the Bible answers every question explicitly. You won’t find your company’s business plan for next quarter or the name of your future spouse in the Bible, but we do find clear answers for life’s biggest questions in Scripture, as well as guiding principles for other questions.
The best place to receive biblical counsel is the local church, but since individual pastors don’t have time to study every topic under the sun, supplemental resources like books and blogs are useful. I pray this blog is one such useful resource among many that God will use to help others and magnify his name until that day when the light of his glory shines upon every riddle on earth.
